Thread: Oda's Interviews

Here is my summary for online manga about Oda released yesterday. Oda's previous assistant is the author.
You can read it here: https://shonenjumpplus.com/article/entry/tsumeaka_01

In this manga, Amami Yoshikazu, Oda's previous assistant, aims to learn how to make a good manga from various popular mangakas.
Amami was a street bum in December 2016 due to his unpopular manga being shut down. His age was in 30s with no income.
He recalls his predicament was like a Royal Straight Flush. Editor tries to help him to draw a new manga. When Amami reveals that Oda gave him advice about manga,
editor is surprised and suggests him to draw a manga about Oda's advice itself. When asked, Oda gladly accepts it.

Amami has been a big OP fan. His favorite characters are Crocodile and Fossa. He worked under Oda for 3 years.
Amami says he was not an excellent assistant. He was eager to ask Oda about many things, but gave it up since he didn't want Oda to waste time for him.
Instead, Amami decided to secretly listen to Oda talking with others.

In 2016, Oda kindly invited Aammi to his Christmas party despite him being a street bum at that time. Amami recalls Christmas party in Oda's house was awesome.
He felt as if it was exactly like a party in ONE PIECE world. Of course all food was delicious, but he considers the most precious moment for him in the party was that the assistants felt free to ask Oda about manga to their heart's content.

When Amami asked Oda about how to make a good manga, Oda advised him to draw an "insane" manga which editor is about to get angry at.
There are thousands of serialized mangas in Japan, only 30% of which are said to be in the black, so it's important to stand out. Oda told him not to hesitate to reveal his true disposition.
According to Oda, it is so-called "Take off underpants" technique (!!). He said that it is also important to convince audience of the mangaka's "insane" disposition.

Editor is impressed that this episode about Oda is more interesting than Amami's manga. Editor tells Amami that it would be a good idea if he holds some interviews with various mangakas about manga techniques.
Amami is glad that he is not a street bum anymore now.

*It's announced that the next chapter will be released on November 19th.

*Oda saved another previous assistant who was about to die due to no money. When he made a phone call to Oda that he was in desperate situation, Oda told him to come to his studio right away.
Oda and his wife decided to rescue and hire the assistant again. (source: ONE PIECE Magazine, 2017)

*Speaking of a party, when Oda held a Takoyaki party in his house, he was reported to police by his neighbors since it was too noisy. (source: TV show July 22nd, 2016)

Seems like being manga assistant is not a good paying job, even being associated with something like One Piece.
“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”

Here is my summary for ONE PIECE editor Naito and Sugita's live streaming several hours ago

    - Oda is coming up with amazing new ideas about manga one after another. Sugita witnessed a rough storyboard in the near future which Oda has just drawn/written.
It was so awesome that he suddenly told Oda via messaging app that the storyboard is great despite Oda talking about another topic.
Sugita reveals that the chapter will be released in Shonen Jump in "several weeks" ("数週間" 2-9 weeks). Before the live streaming, Naito warned Sugita never to spill the beans about that chapter.

    - Marty Adelstein, who is responsible for the live adaptation in Holywood, recently visited Japan and enjoyed ONE PIECE Premium Show in Osaka with OP editors in order to
realize again that they can't betray those audience. Editors and him shook hands. Oda himself met Adelstein and really enjoyed talking with him.

Just hope that chapter is the start of the Reverie man, WCI cannot come back to what it was, not even with Tite drawing One Piece. Pleaaaase, end it in 8 chaps or less.
Nothing exists; even if something exists, nothing can be known about it. Even if something can be known about it,
knowledge about it can't be communicated to others
. Even if it can be communicated, it cannot be understood.

Here is my summary for Oda's interview in "Super Kabuki 2 ONE PIECE Grand Live" book released today.

    - Oda revealed it will take another 1-2 years 7 months -1 year and 7 months for ONE PIECE to enter Wano arc. He also says Wano arc will include an episode about Ace.

    - Audience sometimes ask Oda about foreshadowing via fan letters, which makes him think, "OMG! I haven't mentioned it yet!"
When audience ask him, "What are the name of this Luffy's move based on, he searches it on OP fansite. (Similar statement was
found in his author comment in chapter 422 in 2006.) Oda feels as if him and his audience are working together to create ONE PIECE.

    - The sound effect "BOOM/DON" (ドン) in ONE PIECE is based on Japanese drums as seen in highlight scenes in Jidaigeki.
    (ex. https://youtu.be/FHtrFv7on10?t=44s)

    - Oda came up with the idea of Marineford Summit War long ago.

    - Oda says it's hard to talk about justice through Luffy's mouth since he is a pirate.
So, Oda just puts a simple conclusion that the opposite side of justice is another justice. Oda says it's one of the main themes of ONE PIECE.

    - Oda says ONE PIECE has many flashback scenes as opposed to traditional Shonen mangas which didn't show much detailed backstories of characters.
Oda thinks there are too many mangas out there these days which handles flashbacks.

    - Oda's effort for ONE PIECE is divided into drawings (40%) and story (60%).

    - Oda says the characteristics of islands in each arc are pretty different so that audience don't get bored.
He also says that the personality of Luffy never changes. According to Oda, now that audience have fully grasped Luffy's personality,
they sometimes complain even when Oda intentionally let Luffy do something unlike him.

    - Oda decided to make Luffy's design simple as possible as he could when he started OP since he thought the designs of other characters would gradually become more complicated .

    - The fundamental of ONE PIECE is that people help others desperately. Oda believes everyone loves this kind of story.

    - Oda already has the idea of how ONE PIECE will end ever since the first chapter. According to another interview in 2012,
Oda said the final arc will be so amazing that it will make Marineford War arc look like nothing.

... what? Are you sure about this translation? It just seems weird, especially after editor claiming Wano to start in 2017. I can imagine few months added due to usual arc inflation, but 1-2 years is... long.

Won't that would make the arc last way more?

I can't take those last Editors seriously, sorry, they time after time come out and say things like that without actual support from Oda and in general are very talkative against the old ones.

If they had say that Wano will be in 2017 everything would be great and no one would be moannig about the rushing of WCI

I really doubt they said it without backing from Oda. Remember he thought he's halfway through during Skypiea, he is as clueless as editors. And the comment isn't what makes people complain. We had main objectives of WCI arc completed long ago, and we started the climax 40 chapters in... only for it to turn out not to be a climax. Exactly what happened in Dressrosa about which people complained too, even though there was little to no hype for the arc after.
EDIT: Also, in both cases we got 10+ chapters of chase right after, during which the pacing slowed down considerably.

Remember that Oda and even his editors are awful with actual estimates, like how much of the series is complete at this time, so don't take this too much to heart because Jump Festa will probably give us more official news regarding it. I personally doubt that it'd take a year because even with Whole Cake Island likely wrapping up in the next month or so, Reverie will in no way be so long as to take up almost a whole year of the story. Wano will happen in 2018 I think but it won't take a whole year to get to it, there might have been some confusion

Yes Oda is bad at estimating time it's true but if he had give the pacing he gives the last 10-15 chapters from the beginning and don't rush it with those events you talk about and "fake" climax no one would complain about that. And even more if no one was on "oh come one end this we wait for Wano this year" thing

Just let the pace being slow as One Piece was ever since. This arc from the very begin was a "gotta go fast" not letting things to explain and extent like the half and more of her childrens to never introduce properly and be more a background character and I don't mean Smoothie only

If that tells me something, it's that Reverie won't be a short arc like what we thought. I doubt it will take 50 chapters, but it's for sure not a 5 chapters long arc. But I wonder how will Oda handle an arc without Luffy, maybe we'll have a search for Marco arc alongside? or maybe a small arc to reunite the full Supernova lineup?
EDIT: also, I would like to see the former Spade pirates if Ace is going to get any focus

I don't know how would this arc look if it was paced differently, but slowing down after the wedding gotta look bad. It's as if Oda changed his mind halfway through. And honestly, just skimming through many members of the crew who can kick some ass gave the good feeling of the size and strength of the crew. And we had many fast-paced arcs in the past, and the general trend was picking up as the story of arc progressed.

Look at Alabasta, slow for first dozen of chapters, and then consistent pacing for the reminder, picking up a little after the casino. I really think it was perfect. I kinda feel like in OP of today, the run to Alubarna would take 10 chapters too. And we'd had match ups set right before Mr. Prince, but then we'd get a reset.
