That 5-5 was pretty crazy too. And people are lamenting he's only batting .270?

Also, ALL-STAR GAME IN LIKE 9 MINUTES.

It's like a preview for the World Series, what with the HF advantage rule.

Wow, watching the Pirates and Braves going 19 innings in an AWESOME game and the home plate umpire completely fucked up an obvious out call at home plate allowing the Braves to get the W, and I wouldn't be surprised the reason he did it was because he probably wanted to go home. Just blows my fucking mind

    EDIT:

    Seriously, unfucking believable

Torre's "human element" = "human fudge up".

I agree with him in principle, and frankly I'm against using instant replay in MLB, but ump calls can be a real pain when they're THAT OBVIOUS. I mean even Joyce's blown call wasn't as clearly in err as that one.

The Giants had a blown call in yesterday's 13-inning sudden death, too. Aaron Rowand was caught stealing (?) second and he eventually scored on a run. The game should have been over by the 9th inning if that call had been made properly, but it was a close play, at least.

So, update on trade stuff -

    Giants get Carlos Beltran
Phillies get mad and sign Hunter Pence

I'm actually a bit happy for this one since it weakens the Phillies in the upcoming years. Charlie Manuel might have dissed Lincecum, but Lincecum, Cain and Bumgarner are all young guys, and will be resigned for upcoming seasons. With how paranoid the Giants are for the health of their players, I doubt we'll see them get injured. Meanwhile, there's no guarantee that Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Roy Halladay will be able to maintain their pace and stay healthy simply because they're approaching their mid thirties, leaving the Phillies with Hamels and the young arms to hold down the fort. I much prefer the Braves' farm system in this regard, so getting Pence really means "World Series or bust". And if they bust, they'll bust big.

However, at the same time, I'm a bit annoyed that the Phillies seemingly over-reacted to the Giants taking 2/3. They blow up Barry Zito...and are surprised when Lincecum (#1) and Cain (#2) give quality outings against Cole Hamels (#4) and a replacement player? And the Phillies didn't even have Placido Polanco at 3B, their offense wasn't at its most potent when going against the Giants.

The Phillies have a great offense, in spite of what people say. It's not weak at all, and was their main selling point in 2008. That Cole Hamels could give such consistent quality starts is what earned him his two MVP's. The Phillies only weakness is their BULLPEN, which is what they should have been focused on, not their offense. Heath Bell should have been their prize, but I think it's possible he'd go to an AL East club by tomorrow evening, and not the Rangers.

I'm itching to see what happens to Ubaldo.

The Beltran trade won't hurt the Giants quite so badly...I never thought too highly of Zach Wheeler, he struck me as a Brian Wilson type with a high WHIP, but lacking the wicked off speed and curve of Jonathan Sanchez. Surkamp could be the real deal, and might even be ML ready by next year. If only we didn't have a holes at SS, CF and Catcher, we might be able to go somewhere. The aforementioned 13-inning game was pretty disgusting to watch.

Congratulations to the Arizona Diamondbacks for clinching the NL West! You guys have played good ball and I know I'll be cheering for you in the playoffs (and for the Texas Rangers in the AL West). Please don't do a 2010 Reds and get no hit in the first game, I want to see the NL West strike a blow the deep spenders of the East.

Tonight's game was tragic because Cain got saddled with 3 runs and the loss despite a magnificent pitching performance. Not to demean Saunders, but he was pitching against the worst hitting team in the major leagues.

So many story-lines converged on this night -

    1. The Giants failing to hit with runners in scoring position.
    2. The Giants getting hits/runs they shouldn't (Cabrera HR) but not getting the ones they should.
    3. Pablo Sandoval's right shoulder forcing Gibson to play all left-handed batters.
    4. The Diamondbacks and Giants playing another 1 run game.
    5. The law of averages catching up to Sergio Romo.
    6. Goldschmidt energizing the Diamondbacks (as he's done since he came up).
    7. Matt Cain getting no run support in a hard-luck loss.
    8. The fallen Aubrey Huff getting the last out.
    9. The cancer of no offense finally killing the Giants.

It felt like a play-off game and was a "thrill" to watch. Again, congrats D-backs! No hard feelings snakes, go all the way!

As an Orioles fan, this was one of the greatest nights of baseball I have ever experienced.

Kind of weird there's more baseball after that grand finale to the regular season, but we did have games, and I saw/listened to most of them.

    1. Sorry D-backs, I think you're going to get steam-rolled.
    2. Apparently, nature itself wants Detroit to lose in the NLDS.
    3. Shields, you suck.
    4. Come on Cards, you can pitch better than that.

Great game. Glad Detroit came out on top.

Hopefully the Cards pull it out tomorrow.
    Don't really care about D-Backs v Brewers.

Detroit v Texas is definitely going to be a good series. I'm really hoping the Rangers win it convincingly though. I would really love to see them win it all this year.

I'm hoping for a Cardinal win, but for Bud Selig, that would be worse than learning he has Alzheimer's. No disrespect to Detroit, Texas, Arizona, St. Louis or Milwaukee, but a World Series with any of those teams will be guaranteed to have lower ratings than last year's. And that would mean the expanded playoff planned for 2013.

    *watches Rangers v. Tigers*

OK, given these circumstances, I predict the World Series will be-

    Milwaukee Brewers v. Texas Rangers

    Rangers in 4.
